Today, I had my first look at the trailer of 7 Khoon Maaf. I had seen the photographs earlier and since it was a Vishal Bharadwaj movie, I was looking forward to it, but was totally unprepared for came in front of me. The trailer was scary – not in a horror movie kind of way, but in a frightening scenario kind of way. The song “Darling ..” which sets the trailer rolling starts on a low, low note and then gains momentum with each passing word … the scenes come and go, we are introduced to the 7 husbands, and you feel as if you are on a roller coaster ride. I saw the trailer again, this time it was less scary but it was still quite shocking. Several hours later, I am unable to forget the song. Here’s more about the movie, enjoy it while I try to mute the background score inside my head which is still set to: “Darling, aankhon se aankhein chaar karne do”
As the trailer gains speed, we are introduced to 7 husbands –
1) Neil Nitin Mukesh as Major Rodriques
2) John Abraham as Jimmy
3) Irrfan Khan as Wasiullah
4) Aleksandr Dyachenko as Vronsky
5) Annuu Kapoor as Keemat
6) Naseeruddin Shah as Tarafdar
7) Vivaan Shah

And even as we watch spellbound, Priyanka is bewitching, romancing and marrying these men and then laughing and crying hysterically. The trailer is crafted with immense skill to pique the interest without revealing too much. You can judge that Priyanka’s role is that of an incredibly beautiful woman (we can safely assume that our Sussana here is a bit eccentric and very edgy) who charms and then kills – literally the femme fatale.
The prosthetics that Priyanka is said to have used are suiting her to perfection. Another striking aspect of the film is the distinctive features of each husband and the different domestic surroundings of each marriage. They are totally at variance with each other but are bound by one common thread – that of their gruesome and sorry end.
Expect the unexpected: If Vishal’s reputation is anything to go by, he must have given a unique twist to this story and adapted the entire setting to suit his style of direction. It is common knowledge now, that 7 Khoon Maaf is an adaptation of Ruskin Bond’s short story, Sussana’s Seven Husbands, where the protagonist marries and kills seven husbands one by one.
PC all the way: Set to be released around Valentine’s Day this will probably be a dark and sombre movie. If I were a contemporary actress, I would certainly be jealous of Priyanka Chopra. As an actress she is becoming better day by day. Due to her increasing abilities, the best directors and storylines are coming her way. She has had meaty projects in the past and it seems that this will be the icing on the cake. This movie is riding on the shoulders of Piggy Chopps and along with her very talented co-stars, we have to see whether she can woo the audience.
Surprise package? The one “husband” of Priyanka who seems to have been kept under wraps is Vivaan Shah. The younger son of Naseeruddin Shah is playing the youngest husband while Naseeruddin Shah is the oldest of the lot. He is not featured prominently in the trailer (in fact, he is the ‘blink and you miss’ case) and there must be a good reason behind this. Maybe, they are keeping him as the surprise package. Any which way, it will probably be the first movie in Indian cinema (or even in world cinema) where a real life father and son are acting as husbands to the same female.
What the trailer intended, it has accomplished. What remains to be seen is, whether the movie lives up to the hype. Only time will tell … till then, “Darling …”

This will be a break from the usual male dominated movies that come out in Bollywood as we have a female in the lead that too in a suspense thriller! I hope the film sets a benchmark for other filmmakers when it comes to making women related movies!
