It all started with the Khiladi movies. The comedy in the likes of Main Khiladi Tu Anadi and Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi did a very good job of entertaining. Then came the Priyadarshan directed hit- Hera Pheri. The trio of Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal did a superb job and had the audience in splits. The Priyadarshan – Akshay Kumar combination seemed to work well together for some time as Bhool Bhulayiaa too proved to be paisa vasool.
The second instalment of Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri, however didn’t match up to its standards, probably because of the change in directors. Since then, Akshay has starred in a few rom-coms and has begun to be associated with such films. While the association bit isn’t really a bad thing for him, the problem lies in the fact that the quality of the comedy in his movies has been consistently falling. It is also beginning to get a little monotonous to see him in similar roles.
Post Welcome, the movies that Akshay has acted in have not quite hit the target in terms of attracting roars of laughter from the audience. Houseful, Chandni Chowk to China and Singh is Kinng(which was reasonably ‘okay’) left many disappointed as usually the hype built around the movies often raised our hopes only to find the movies fall way short of our expectations.
He may have a hit a new low with Tees Maar Khan, which besides its hit item number, Sheila Ki Jawani, had nothing much to rave about. Even Patiala House, which was a different sort of film, failed to impress.
One can’t really out rightly blame the actor for all the failures though. Akshay is indeed a hugely talented actor who has proven his worth in the industry beyond doubt. A lot depends on the storyline and the dialogues which aren’t entirely in the hands of the actors. Or perhaps he set the bar too high with his initial successes but hasn’t been able to meet it in his other trysts with comedy films. Even then, maybe it’s time for him to be a little more careful with his selection of films or maybe even try his hand at something new for a change.
So as his new movie Thank You releases on 8th April, it makes one wonder, will this put his career back on track or will it be a case of ‘oops! I did it again’? Well, that only time will tell. Not much of it left now anyway. Hopefully after watching Thank You we will indeed be thanking him for giving us what we expect from him- an impeccable entertainer.
