Please note: This movie review of Dear Zindagi has been contributed by a guest writer.
Hey friends, it has been a long time since I wrote last. I know I am late but it does not matter as long you all like it. I would like to share my review of the movie “Dear Zindagi”.
Dear Zindagi is a film by Gauri Shinde (English Vinglish) starring Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan in lead roles.. The film also stars Aditya Roy Kapoor, Ali Zafar, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Kunal Kapoor and Angad Bedi. This film is basically about the youth and how they deal with their lives, relationships and problems with their parents.
The movie addresses the issue of Mental Health of one self and need of counseling. It came on time when few months back Deepika Padukone came out about her fight against her depression, which was very brave of her to do so. Now Gauri Shinde has done the same thing by addressing the elephant in the room in a light and sensitive manner through the protagonist Alia Bhatt. She has done it in a simple way and hits bulls eye because keeping a story simple and delivering it without preaching is hard.
Dear Zindagi Movie Review and Synopsis of
Kaira (Alia Bhatt) is an aspiring cinematographer who does small-time ads and wants to shoot an entire film. She has a backstory which shows she is insecure about relationships. Due to these insecurities, she ditches boys before they can cheat on her. The movie shows her having four different relationships. Raghuvendra (Kunal Kapoor) a film producer, who invests in Kaira’s film. Sid (Angad Bedi) a nightclub owner, who is Kaira’s childhood sweetheart. Rumi (Ali Zafar) is a musician or singer who engaged in music and love. Lastly, there is Aditya Roy Kapoor who plays the role of a charming furniture dealer.
Alia has done a marvelous job in her role of a confused and lost girl. She is not apologetic about who she is and what she wants from Zindagi. It is the people around who make her guilty about her choices.
Come on guys, grow up.
Every girl doesn’t want to get married and have children and if she is not in a relationship with a guy than it does not mean she is a lesbian. There is life without the burden of getting married. Why does our society always think marriage is the ultimate goal in a girl’s life? I have still not got the answer to this after being married for 27 years. Hats off to Gauri Shinde for telling the story with so much maturity and sensitivity.
I would also applaud SRK for playing second fiddle to Alia who is four films old only. It takes guts and confidence to play a handsome and dashing “DIMAAG KA DOCTOR” with sheer subtlety. Dr. Jahangir Khan aka Jug (Shah Rukh Khan) is a therapist who helps Kaira bring a sense of calm into her restless life. He helps her to gain her a new view of living life.
Shah Rukh’s acting is like a breath of fresh air, and a clean break from his last few releases.. In this film, he does a different role and he does it quite well.. He helps Kaira understand the meaning of life through unconventional methods such as by riding a cycle, playing games with waves, taking counselling sessions while walking in nature.
He must have done this because he had faith in the script and story was the hero of the movie. Now nobody is bragging about his performance because there is bias towards him and they are taken aback by his work that he could do justice to the role.
Yaaron, you should celebrate good cinema; not star status.
Lastly, I would like to say that the music of this film is spot on. Especially, the fact that this album doesn’t have “DARU, VODKA, WHISKEY or DRUNKENNESS” in its lyrics. I would like to hug Gulzar saab and Kausir Munir for refraining from such words. The songs convey the message of the film “agar kuch hua hai toh kya hua, aage bado. Zindagi yahaan kataam nahin hoyee hai bina shaarab payee hum Zindagi Jee lege. It is a big deal to make a clean music album without getting bogged down with herd mentality. It sends a positive message to the nation’s youth who listen to music.
The soundtrack of movie “Dear Zindagi” is fresh, soulful and light-hearted. The songs have been composed by Amit Trivedi very beautifully. The song “Love You Zindagi” sung by Jasleen Royal and Amit Trivedi adds innocence to the music album of Dear Zindagi. Arijit Singh also adds a fresh take in this movie by singing the romantic song “Ae Zindagi” with new version which is written by Gulzar and “Tu Hi Hai” in a most different way and add soulfulness in the movie. “Let’s Break Up” by Vishal Dadlani and “Just Go To Hell Dill” by Sunidhi Chauhan were average singles.
The album also features a nice remix of the 90s classic Ae Zindagi Gale Lag Ja in signature Amit Trivedi style.
Congrats, to everyone connected for making such feel good movie.
