Television news has become the main source of information for most of us. But there has always been a nagging feeling that maybe we are being taken for a ride and that maybe they are not giving us the whole story, only a biased view of it.
Ram Gopal Verma has now picked up this very topical subject and made it the backdrop of his film Rann. Corrupt politicians have been the staple tagline of innumerable Bollywood films, here they are trying to destroy the very powerful world of media broadcasting. This is the first time where television news has become the foundation of the story and everything else emanates from that focal point.
The film runs totally on the very broad shoulders of Amitabh Bachchan. His 8 minute speech about corruption in the media industry is riveting, delivered with grace and dignity, and with a force and magnetism that have become his hallmarks.
Ritesh Deshmukh has moved over to a sober role for this film, and under Ram Gopal’s excellent direction he has managed to hold his own. However he does get overshadowed by Sudeep who has more range and definitely more cine time in the movie.
A riveting film, it has all the characteristics of a Ram Gopal Verma film. Cinematography and editing are of the highest order, and even though there are moments when the film seems to wander aimlessly, it is an enthralling film and a very relevant one.
