When I first saw Ranveer Singh on a TV channel in connection to his debut movie’s promotion, I was like “okay, now who’s son are you?” Ranveer didn’t look much like a hero to me and all his claims of being selected for the YRF super launchpad after going through several rounds of screening and readings cut no ice with me. It seemed like the simple case of being born with a silver spoon in his mouth, except nobody could actually trace the source of the silver.
When I first saw the rushes of Band Baaja Baraat, I was still not convinced. The boy looked good, only don’t they show the catchiest parts in the trailers? Then I saw Band Baaja Baraat. Watching BBB was a revelation of sorts and dad-sponsored or not, the movie rocked. Ranveer Singh had arrived and with a bang.
A Star is Born
Considering how Ranveer’s debut movie was initially offered to and rejected by Ranbeer Kapoor and how his rejection hurt Aditya Chopra (Producer, BBB), it was a just a series of events that went all in favor of Ranveer Singh. Adi vowed to get a new face for the movie and turn him into a superstar. The role was author backed and Ranveer did his homework well, the rest as they say, is history. Band Baaja Baraat went on to be one of the biggest movies of 2010 and an unlikely hero was born. Whether it was his reckless dialogue delivery (the hilarious “bread pakore ki kasam”) or his act of the typical Delhi ka “launda”, Ranveer won hearts all the way.
Ranveer is now officially the hottest new boy on the block and he lived his share of struggles and frustrations before he got there. Ranveer, who belongs to Mumbai had been struggling for three years in Mumbai, socializing, networking, trying to meet directors, producers and anybody who could land him a good role. One thing that he clearly knew about his career path was that he won’t do any bit roles or ads to fill the time. He was offered several such gigs, but he trusted his instincts and said no to all of them, waiting for that one role that would turn his fortunes around.
Stardom and More
His wait paid off when he was selected by none other than the Yash Raj Films to play the lead role. Ranveer confessed that he did embarrass himself by going down on his knees and crying when he heard the news of him being the chosen one. Extreme hard work and the bang-on portrayal of the character of Bittoo Sharma has made Ranveer a household name today. His debut has itself brought him several awards and nominations and I feel the best is yet to come. Reports are that Ranveer has signed a three year exclusivity contract with YRF where he won’t work with any other banner.
Ranveer’s next movie, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl will again see him playing a Delhi boy, but this time around his role will that be of a cool, slick “lady killer” kind of guy. Let’s just hope he doesn’t keep repeating the Delhi guy act too often or he’ll miss out on umpteen other opportunities.
